A couple years ago, I moved to a new town and rented an apartment–figuring I’d get the lay of the land, then look for a house.
The first night there, my upstairs neighbor came downstairs around 11 PM to let me know my music had been keeping him awake.
First, I was mortified–as this had never been an issue before. Next, I was saddened because I knew it meant I’d have to pack up my speakers and put them in a closet–as bass they put out comes through the walls even at low volumes.
It was a textbook case of not knowing what you’d had until it was gone because–when listening to music through computer speakers–it just felt like so much was missing. Mostly, it was bass–but not for its own sake. Since every instrument has a different frequency range, you can nearly remove an instrument by removing that range.
So, there were whole passages of songs that went missing–basslines, kick drums, and so on.
Of course, the opposite is true as well. If you stop using computer speakers and use an external speaker instead, you will hear songs in an entirely new way–with new instruments populating old favorites.
One of the key ways to improve a workout is to build a playlist that balances freshness with familiarity. To that end, investing in a good speaker will allow you to achieve this effect–without changing a single song in your playlist.
To illustrate this point, the folks at KEiiD sent me a pair of speakers to test out.
The virtues are straightforward:
*They’re bluetooth–so you can use them without cables.
*They have a trio of EQ settings–so you can dial in the frequencies you need.
*They have passive subwoofers–which pump out a little bass that’s separate from the main speakers so that the frequencies don’t bleed into each other.
*It’s worth noting that these aren’t going to put out the sort of bass you’d get from an external subwoofer, but they do broadcast in stereo–which also helps bring out instruments that would otherwise be lost in a mono mix or single speaker.
*Finally, the aluminum design looks great. And, classy to boot.
In short, if you’re looking for a way to make an immediate improvement to your workout–without having to track down any new songs at all–a solid speaker like this will make your existing playlists sound better and fresher (even when you’re not exercising).
