Review: Orasant Electric Drum Pad with Lights

Drum Pad with LightsThe other day, I found myself air drumming to a song that came up on shuffle.

I’ve owned drum kits in the past, but–in my current place–we share a wall with our neighbors.

So, I just can’t make that kind of racket.

Also, drums take up a lot of space.

So, I found myself wondering if there was some kind of desktop electronic drums that I could play–as a way to play drums without them taking up half the room and making so much noise.

As, it turns out, there are kits like this available.

They are marketed to kids and–in fairness–they are probably best suited to kids because of the size.

That said, the folks at Orasant provided with a model to test out. And, it had a number of features that I wasn’t expecting:

*As you can see from the image above, the drums are configured like a real kit. Specifically, the toms are in the right positions. Several of the other kits on the market have the floor tom way off to the right–in a position that no real drum would occupy. But, this kit puts everything where it needs to be.

*The kit comes with a kick drum and hi-hat pedal. It never even occurred to me that the pedals might be possible on the desktop unit, so they made for a happy surprise.

*The set comes with a built-in speaker, so you can hear the drums without needing an amp. Plus, they have an 3.5mm input, so you can play your music through the speakers and drum along. And, a headphone jack, if your surroundings require less noise.

*Plus, the whole thing lights up as you play (which might be novel for a kid), but they were good enough to include an off switch so you can turn the lights off (which I prefer).

*Also, it’s rechargeable and rolls up neatly–so you can take it on the go easily.

At the outset, I thought this might make for a way to stay active in the office. And, it’s not ideal for that–as it doesn’t allow much of a range of motion for an adult.

But, it would allow a kid to move around more–while getting acclimated to a drum kit that’s configured correctly. And, as noted, it had a bunch of other features I hadn’t even considered.

So, if there’s a young person in your life with a burgeoning interest in the drums, this might make for a way to get them started–without deafening everyone in the vicinity
